New Beginnings at King

Elena – QA Analyst

What attracted you to King in the first place?
The games. King’s games are truly for everyone. For people of all ages all around the world. My 80-year-old Russian grandma plays Candy Crush. Isn’t it amazing? During my interview process, I got to talk to six different people from different departments and I felt that we were on the same page with all of them.

A little bit about your role at King
I joined King in June 2018 as a QA Analyst for Candy Crush Saga. The QA role at King is quite different from many other companies. Usually, QA stands for Quality Assurance and QA people are perceived as ones who take care of the app’s quality. Here, at King, QA means Quality Assistance. We don’t do Quality Assurance. Instead, we help Teams to take ownership of the quality.

What were your first few days like?
Very sweet by all means. I had a lot of fika (Swedish tea breaks) with different teams. It was a small celebration for me as a new team member who joined Candy Crush. I felt very welcomed. The onboarding process was very well organized. From the very first day, my team started involving me in the actual work process and asking for my opinion. It’s such a nice feeling that you are a valuable team member.

Oleh – Developer

What were your first few days like?
It was intensive, full of new information from all the areas but extremely exciting at the same time. Onboarding process in the company is very smooth and I started to do actual work on my first week and this feels so good when you can start contributing to the project from the very beginning.

What are your long-term goals at King?
Every developer at King has a development plan for the future and I like it very much since company lets you grow as a developer and setting long-term goals which are challenges for you and helps you to be useful for the company as well. A developer can never get bored with this approach and I appreciate it a lot.

Good things about King?
Open. This word describes one of my favourite things about the company. You can always ask anybody about anything, the company shares all the plans and ideas with its employees and this is the best work environment where everybody can be productive and understand what and why we are doing things.

Muriel – Principal UX Researcher

A little bit about your role at King
As a UX Researcher, my role is to incorporate the voice of the players throughout the game development process. UX Research is a specialization of the field of User Experience (UX) and its focus is on understanding the users – who they are, what are their needs, expectations, desires – and ensure that these learnings are used to inform design decisions.

Good things about King?
As a Kingster, you really feel pampered and valued both as a person and as a professional. I really like the company culture and all the values that it conveys. It’s the confirmation of what I saw during my “research” period about King: anyone I talked to that had worked at King had a very emotional response, an attachment to the company that is not common at all. Great job!

What are your long-term goals at King?
My goal is to spread the “UX research” virus. I hope to see how all the games at King are conceptualized, developed and experimented on with the users’ input as another data point. When we hear the term “data” we all think of numbers. The truth is that “data” can both be qualitative or quantitative. Big data – numbers – tell us the “what”; what players are doing, what is happening in the game. Thick data – qualitative – tell us the “why”; when we talk to users – even if it’s a small sample – we learn the reasons why they’re doing the things we see in the numbers. The combination of “big” and “thick” is really powerful.

Elio – Game Developer Intern

A little bit about your role at King
I joined King’s Berlin Studio in June 2018 as a Game developer Intern in the Kingternship program. Here, I am part of the live team of Candy Crush Jelly Saga where we take care of the release cycle, solve bugs and optimize the games for future releases.

What attracted you to King in the first place?
First and foremost, the games. I remember the success of Candy Crush Saga when I moved to Asia in 2013 and slowly started exploring the rest of the library and kept getting impressed with how polished and fun these games were. While working in the games industry in the past I’ve always heard positive stories about working for King on both the personal and professional level.

What are your long-term goals at King?
Learn as much as I can from this great opportunity that I was given working with some of the smartest and most talented people in the industry. I want to contribute to the game to make it as stable as possible and hope to continue working at King for a much longer time than my internship.)

Tarek – Jr Game Developer

What attracted you to King in the first place?
I come from a small startup, I love the energy, the fun and the mindset. Malmo studio is fairly small and we work in small teams. I guess what attracted me to King and Malmo studio is the fact that I still get the feeling of working in a startup while getting the benefits of working in a big company. Two birds, one stone 🙂

What are your long-term goals at King?
Like many others, I am planning on sticking around for a long time 🙂 I really like it here and I want to gain more experience and hope that one day I get the chance to help other fresh starters.

Good things about King?
Even though we are a small team, we have so many nationalities. It is really cool to discover other cultures and make friends from all over the world. Plus everybody is super friendly and helpful.  I also like the high level of trust you get here, the mindset and of course the company perks 🙂
